The classic Murray & Lanman Florida Water Cologne likely needs no introduction, but I will give one anyway for those who are new to this wonderful little tool. Originating in either Italy or France, Florida Water was brought over to New Orleans with some of the earlier perfumers and became quickly beloved for its clean unisex fragrance. Given the nature of its preparation, however – an alcohol base with the distilled essential oils of various botanicals – it quickly became considered a favored spiritual water among southern folk magick practitioners both here in the United States and down as far as South America. It is known for its cleansing, renewing, and protective properties and for its common appreciation as an offering or anointing tool among various spirits and deities within a wide variety of American mythos. With its notes of lemon peel, bergamot, orange blossom absolute, neroli, rose, lavender, cinnamon, and clove, everyone – in our realm and others – seems to love Florida Water (myself included)!

Ingredients: Denatured alcohol, water, fragrance (likely some combination of lemon, bergamot, orange blossom, neroli, rose, lavender, cinnamon, and clove, but the company doesn’t disclose this), FD&C blue #1, and FD&C yellow #5.

💡 The Witch’s Recommendations: Having learned a lot from local practitioners in New Orleans, I use this stuff frequently! I mix it into khernips (after preparing the initial lustral water, since it is flammable) to enhance its cleansing properties, sprinkle it around during house cleansings, use it to wash and anoint the tools and decor on my altar, add it to offerings when I feel an offering needs that little something extra, toss a bit in with the laundry when I feel like I’ve carried in stagnant energy, place it on the temples of my head to help cool off when I’ve feeling overheated in the summer, and wear it out when I feel like I need a little extra protection. You might also use it in a cleansing or protective floor wash or light it (safely and carefully) in a safe place in a fire-safe container to invigorate your wards. I also always blow gently along the top of my bottle (so that it makes that deep whistling sound) before using it, as I was taught this serves to attract positive spirits to aid and protect you and has the added benefit of giving a bit of your own energy to whatever working you’re using it for. This really is a staple item for many.
